Many women struggle with muffin top - the unsightly rolls of fat that frequently spill over the top of their waistbands. This area has long been a difficult one to treat cosmetically. However, new liposuction treatments are making it more and more possible to remove the fact and restore a youthful, streamlined and bulge free figure.

Where fat is deposited is largely a matter of genetics. Exercise and diet can help control the amount of fat that one's body stores, but the body pretty much picks where it wants to store its fat. Frequently, the body's choices are not what estheticians would consider ideal. Especially as one ages, stubborn pockets of fat accumulate in unsightly areas. One of these areas is around the waistline. Lately, major fashion centers such as Paris, London, and New York are been making waistbands lower and tighter, which both exposes and emphasizes these fat bulges. Although "muffin top" may seem like a cute name, it nonetheless is a serious issue for some people.

Cosmetic surgery has also historically had a difficult time treating this area. Fat in this area can sometimes be difficult to remove. Additionally, this area requires delicate control and fine detail. One doctor points out the need for caution: "There is a very fine line between removing excess fat and causing a collapse of the buttock."

However, some doctors now state that they have the tools to combat muffin top. One new technique, known as "superficial liposuction," has been launched in London. This technique involves removing a smaller amount of fat than traditional liposuction frequently does. For muffin tops, this means a more natural, yet slimmer look. This operation does have its downsides, though. It must be performed under general anesthetic and takes up to four hours. Most patients require an overnight hospital stay afterward. The procedure also comes with a hefty price tag: between 3,500 and 6,500 pounds, depending on how extensive the treatment is. Patients also are required to take a week off work and wear compression garments for up to six weeks to aid in the healing process.

Some people also suggest that ultrasonic assisted liposuction can be ideal in fighting muffin top. Ultrasonic liposuction uses ultrasonic sound waves to break down and melt fat so that it will be easier to remove. Some suggest that this makes it better suited for dense and fibrous fatty tissues. However, the medical community remains divided as to the efficacy and safety of ultrasonic liposuction. One of the main dangers cited by scientists is the possibility of serious burns. The ultrasonic waves heat the patient's tissue, and if a surgeon is not careful, burns can result. Some studies also suggest that the heat produced by ultrasonic liposuction can lead to blood clots.

Still others argue for the efficacy of other techniques. The answer of which technique is in fact best remains unclear. If you are considering getting liposuction for your muffin top, do your research and find out what sort of procedure you would be most comfortable with. Also, be sure to take advantage of the free consultations offered by many surgeons. This can help you understand if liposuction is a good fit for you, and if you are a good candidate for liposuction.
